The IAB just released an AI visibility framework. Most marketers have not even heard of AEO. Here is why that gap is costing your business.
Key Insights
- AI visibility is now measurable: The IAB released its “Measuring Visibility in the AI Era” playbook on 4 August 2026, introducing the “4 P’s of AI Visibility”: Presence, Prominence, Portrayal, and Persuasion, giving brands a standardised way to track how they appear in AI-generated answers.
- Almost nobody is tracking this: Only 16% of brands currently monitor their AI visibility, according to IAB research, meaning 84% of businesses have no idea how AI platforms are representing them to potential customers.
- Search is declining, AI is rising: Search engine use for brand research has dropped 10% in 18 months (from 51.3% to 45.8%), while AI-powered research has climbed to 22.1% and accelerating (DataReportal Digital 2026 Mid-Year Update).
- 4.02 billion people now use AI: That is 81.2% of online adults globally, with generative AI usage up 141% year on year (DataReportal 2026). ChatGPT alone has 900 million weekly active users.
- AEO is validated by every major analyst firm: Gartner, Forrester, HubSpot, and B2B Marketing have all confirmed that Answer Engine Optimisation is replacing traditional SEO as the primary content strategy for visibility.
- Most content is failing the AI test: 49% of consumers say generative AI has made content quality worse (Gartner 2026), which means AI engines are actively filtering for substance over slop.
What Is AI Visibility and Why Should Marketers Care?
AI visibility is whether your brand shows up when someone asks ChatGPT, Google’s AI Overviews, Perplexity, or Copilot a question in your industry. It is that simple. And that urgent.
Here is the problem: most marketers are still obsessing over Google page rankings while an entirely different discovery channel has exploded underneath them. According to the DataReportal Digital 2026 Mid-Year Update, 4.02 billion adults now use AI tools, and 22.1% of all brand research happens through AI services rather than traditional search engines. That number was near zero two years ago.
The IAB clearly agrees this is a turning point. On 4 August 2026, they released “Measuring Visibility in the AI Era,” a framework that finally gives the industry a way to measure what we at LadyBugz have been saying for weeks: if you are not visible to AI, you are becoming invisible to your customers.
Yet in Noleen’s marketing network, spanning hundreds of SEO specialists, content strategists, and digital marketers across South Africa and globally, not a single person has raised this topic. That silence is the opportunity.
What Are the IAB’s 4 P’s of AI Visibility?
The IAB framework breaks AI visibility into four measurable dimensions, and understanding them changes how you think about content entirely.
Presence tracks whether your brand appears in AI responses at all. This includes mention rate, citation rate, share of voice, and visibility momentum. If ChatGPT does not know you exist, none of the other P’s matter.
Prominence measures where and how prominently your content appears in those responses. Are you the first recommendation or buried at the bottom? Are you substantively discussed or just a passing mention?
Portrayal evaluates the context and accuracy of how AI represents your brand. This includes sentiment analysis, framing, and crucially, hallucination rate. AI might mention your brand but say something completely wrong about it. This is brand safety for the AI age.
Persuasion assesses whether that AI visibility actually drives action. Does the recommendation lead to clicks, enquiries, conversions? This connects AI visibility directly to business outcomes.
What strikes us at LadyBugz is how few businesses are even at stage one. Only 16% of brands currently track any form of AI visibility, according to IAB research. The other 84% do not know whether AI is recommending them, misrepresenting them, or ignoring them entirely.
Why Is Traditional SEO No Longer Enough?
Traditional SEO optimises for Google’s search results page. AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation) optimises for AI-generated answers. They are fundamentally different problems.
The numbers tell the story clearly. Gartner projects that organic search traffic will drop 25% by the end of 2026. HubSpot reports a 30% decline in search traffic year on year, the largest ever recorded. Meanwhile, 30% to 60% of US searches now trigger Google’s AI Overviews, which means even Google’s own search results are being replaced by AI summaries.
According to Forrester’s 2026 research, AI answer engines have overtaken both websites and sales representatives as the number one research source for B2B buyers. A staggering 94% of B2B buyers now use AI in their purchasing decisions.
So here is the uncomfortable truth: you could have perfect SEO, rank number one for every keyword, and still be invisible to a growing majority of your potential customers because AI engines do not pull from search rankings. They pull from content that is structured for citation.
This is where AEO comes in. And this is what almost nobody in marketing is doing yet.
What Does AI-Citable Content Actually Look Like?
Meltwater’s 2026 research analysed 9.5 million AI citations across six major AI models to determine what makes content citable by AI engines. Their findings are specific and actionable:
- Lists: 100% of AI-cited content contains structured lists
- H2/H3 headings: 92% uses clear heading hierarchy
- Named entities: 75% includes specific names, brands, and places
- Hard data: 67% contains specific statistics with sources
The format matters as much as the substance. AI engines need structure to parse, extract, and cite your content. A beautifully written narrative paragraph will lose to a well-structured list with data points every time, not because it is better writing, but because AI engines can actually use it.
Here is what is equally important: the content must have substance. HubSpot’s 2026 State of Marketing report found that 49% of consumers say AI-generated content has made overall content quality worse. That is the “slop problem,” and AI engines are getting better at filtering it out. Generic, surface-level content filled with AI-generated filler gets ignored by the very AI engines it was created for. The irony is almost poetic.
The content that gets cited is content with original insight, specific data, named sources, and genuine expertise. Content written by people who actually know their subject.
What Tools Should Marketers Be Using Right Now?
Two tools that most marketers either ignore or underuse are critical for AI visibility, and they are both free.
Google Search Console is the most overlooked tool in digital marketing. It shows you exactly which pages Google has indexed, lets you submit new pages for immediate indexing, monitors search performance by query, and flags issues that prevent your content from being found. If you publish a new article and do not submit it through Google Search Console, you are waiting for Google to find it on its own schedule, which could be days or weeks.
IndexNow API does the same thing for Bing and Yandex. When you publish new content, IndexNow sends an instant notification to these search engines. One API call, immediate awareness. Bing powers Copilot’s search integration, so IndexNow directly affects your AI visibility in Microsoft’s ecosystem.
At LadyBugz, we submit every new piece of content through both Google Search Console and IndexNow the moment it is published. It takes seconds and ensures our content enters the indexing pipeline immediately rather than waiting to be discovered.
The fact that this is news to most marketers tells you everything about where the industry stands. We are not talking about expensive enterprise software here. These are free tools from Google and Microsoft that most marketing agencies have never configured.
How Can You Start Building AI Visibility Today?
You do not need to overhaul your entire content strategy overnight. But you do need to start. Here is what we recommend based on our experience:
- Audit your AI presence: Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Copilot questions about your industry. Does your brand appear in any answers? If not, you are invisible.
- Restructure existing content for AEO: Take your best-performing blog posts and add question-based H2 headings, key insights blocks at the top, specific data with sources, and structured lists. This alone can dramatically improve your AI citability.
- Set up Google Search Console properly: Verify your site, submit your sitemap, and start submitting individual URLs when you publish new content. Monitor which queries bring traffic and optimise for those.
- Configure IndexNow: Generate a key, upload it to your site root, and set up automatic notifications when new content goes live. This is a one-time technical setup.
- Track the IAB’s 4 P’s: Start simple. Search your brand name across three AI platforms monthly. Document whether you have Presence. Note the Prominence and Portrayal. Over time, you will build a baseline that shows improvement.
- Prioritise substance over volume: One deeply researched, data-backed article published monthly will generate more AI citations than twelve generic posts. Original research converts at 5.7% compared to 1.6% for standard blog posts (B2B Marketing 2026).
The IAB’s framework confirms what we have been experiencing firsthand: AI visibility is the new SEO, and most of the marketing world has not caught on yet. That is simultaneously a warning and an opportunity. The brands that move now, that structure their content for AI citation, that track their AI presence, and that invest in genuine expertise over AI-generated filler, will own the conversation in their industries.
